CADILLAC 1902 – 2026
The name Cadillac is one of the most prestigious in the auto world. Founded as a new brand in 1902, it was named after the French explorer Antonine Laumet d La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac.
From its first public appearance at the 1903 New York Auto Show, Cadillac became known for precision engineering, quality of materials and construction. The 1904 car produced a whopping 6&1/2 HP
Other industry firsts, the electrical system in 1012 enabling ignition starting and lighting and the first V8 engine with 70 HP in 1915. Shatter proof glass in 1926 was followed by the industry’s first Synchro-mesh transmission in 1928. Possibly the most important development for the American auto industry was the introduction in 1930 of V-8 engines, which became the standard of American automobile power and reputation up to present day. Along with the V-8, the most iconic engines of the 1930’s with their powerful V-12 and the mighty V-16 engines. The introduction of the V8, V-12, and V-16 made Cadillac the “Standard of the World”.


Most of the magnificent Cadillacs of the 1930’s, with their V-12 and V 16 engines were fitted with custom coach-built bodies, making them each hand built and unique. At the peak of their world recognition, WW ll stopped auto production and Cadillac turned their energy to manufacturing for the American war effort, producing Tanks, Howitzer and anti-aircraft gun carriages, aircraft engine parts, V-8 tractors and 12-cylinder Liberty aircraft engines.
The late 1940’s and 1950’s ushered in major styling changes and firsts.

As the years went on Cadillac maintained its leadership in quality and luxury but became somewhat settled in styling to suit its main customer group and became more conservative.

In the 75th Anniversary year of 1977, Cadillac started to downsize the cars that began a move toward a more edgy design aimed at the “Baby Boomer” generation and the emerging Generation X, the Millennials, and Gen z. Big changes started coming in the early 2000’s.
